बात जब भी देश के सरहदों की हिफाजत की होती है तो इसमें उत्तराखंड का नाम सबसे पहले आता है। मातृभूमि की रक्षा के लिए अपना सर्वस्व न्यौछावर करना देवभूमि की पुरानी परंपरा रही है।

निरंतर चली आ रही परंपरा:
सेना में सिपाही हो या फिर अधिकारी, उत्तराखंड का दबदबा कायम है। भारतीय सैन्य अकादमी (आइएमए) से सैन्य प्रशिक्षण प्राप्त कर पास आउट होने वाले जेंटलमैन कैडेट की संख्या इस सच्चाई को बयां करती है। जनसंख्या घनत्व के हिसाब से देखें तो उत्तराखंड देश को सबसे अधिक जांबाज देने वाले राज्यों में शुमार है। दशकों पूर्व से ही यह परंपरा निरंतर चली आ रही है।
इस बात में भी कोई अतिश्योक्ति नहीं कि उत्तराखंडी युवाओं में देशभक्ति का जच्बा कूट-कूट कर भरा हुआ है। सैन्य अकादमी में साल में दो बार यानी जून और दिसंबर में आयोजित होने वाली पासिंग आउट परेड में इसकी झलक देखने को मिली। पिछले एक दशक के दौरान शायद ही ऐसी कोई पासिंग आउट परेड हो, जिसमें कदमताल करने वाले युवाओं में उत्तराखंडियों की तादाद अधिक न रही हो। यहां यह बात गौर करने वाली है कि राच्य की आबादी देश की कुल आबादी का महज 0.84 प्रतिशत है।

अधिक जनसंख्या वाले राज्य भी उत्तराखंड के सामने कहीं नहीं ठहरते:
यदि इसकी तुलना सैन्य अकादमी से शनिवार को पासआउट होने वाले 288 भारतीय कैडेटों से करें तो इसमें राज्य के सहयोग का स्तर 33 कैडेटों के साथ करीब 11 प्रतिशत है। इस मुकाबले अधिक जनसंख्या वाले राज्य भी उत्तराखंड के सामने कहीं ठहरते नहीं हैं।
पड़ोसी राज्य उत्तर प्रदेश के कैडेटों की संख्या भले ही सबसे अधिक 50 है, मगर इसकी तुलना वहां की आबादी के हिसाब से करें तो भारतीय सेना को जांबाज देने में अपना उत्तराखंड ही अव्वल नजर आता है, क्योंकि उप्र की आबादी का प्रतिशत देश की कुल आबादी का 16 फीसद है, जो उत्तराखंड से कई गुणा अधिक है। राजस्थान, महाराष्ट्र, पंजाब, बिहार, हरियाणा जैसे राज्य भी संख्या बल (पासिंग आउट कैडेट) में उत्तराखंड से पीछे हैं।
